WHAT IS IYENGAR YOGA?
The word yoga comes from the root word ‘Yuj’ meaning ‘Union’, the coming together of the body, mind and spirit. Around 2000 – 2500 years ago, Sage Patanjali wrote a collection of aphorisms on yoga philosophy called ‘The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali’. The yoga traditions have been passed on, mostly by word of mouth, from teacher to student. Iyengar Yoga is the yoga as practiced by Guruji Yogacharya BKS Iyengar, from his extensive studies of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
The unique features of Iyengar Yoga is characterised by precision and alignment, sequencing, timing and the use of props.
“If you look after the root of the tree, the fragrance and flowering will come by itself.
If you look after the body, the fragrance of the mind and spirit will come of itself”.
- BKS Iyengar
